35th Anniversary Friends & Family Newsletter

From Captain Victoria at Dolphin Central

April 2011
Dear Victoria,

Today's the Day! I am finally sitting down to talk with you. It's been a while.

This morning I awoke with a great realization and I want to share it. What struck me was the realness of the fact that absolutely every charter I have had has been of great CONSEQUENCE in my life. The truth is that when we arrive back at the dock and we are saying good-bye or better yet....see ya later and I get to give you a big hug, I feel like it is the beginning or continuation of a friendship. Our day together culminates with a heart feeling, at least for me. Not one charter was a superfluous feeling. Showing you my great big backyard, sharing food, time, new beginnings, erasing fears, laughing and crying from, sometimes deep emotional happiness, has enriched my life. To think that such a feeling can come from going to work everyday is what I need to thank you for!

Waking up with that overwhelming feeling of deep deep gratitude helped to finally get me to sit down and write to you.  There is other news as well, depending upon how long it has been since you visited with me, this might be news.

Dolphin Update
The news about the dolphin is really good. I was with Razor yesterday and she was with a new baby. There was another mom and baby and a nanny. That other mom was one of her daughters and it took my breath away. I started counting back in time and know that I was with her for her first baby in 1994, that was Inca. Dolphin can reproduce at 7 yrs. old so let's just say she was 8 when the baby was born. She nurses for 2 yrs and gets pregnant again so that baby is 3 when mom gives birth again. I figure that Razor is at least 25 yrs old now and could have had 5 children give or take. The babies that we were with yesterday were at least one year old and I can't be certain that Razor was the mom or the nanny. One thing I do know, she is a home schooling Mom and her kids are with her a lot. I am running on with this, sorry. It was just so good to see them happy, healthy and interacting with the boat in such a joyous way, I was playing some flamenco Guitar. The day before it was Raggety with his harem so the pods are doing well from where I sit.

With the BP scare I thought you might want to know that the family is well over 100 strong and growing. There have been a lot of new comers to the area that left the gulf and are hanging out in our waters. I made a claim with BP and they helped me out financially, however I would rather be chartering with you. What would really help the impact from the bad press would be if you would take the time, I know time is a precious thing, and go on TRIP ADVISOR and write a review for me. I sure would appreciate the boost that TRIP ADVISOR can give to a business.

New Website
My website has a whole new look.......now THAT is news!

Chris Fry of project36 was visiting friends that live here and went out for a charter, and has since rebuilt my website. He wants to be able to point to mine as one he has already done when he moves here in the near future. So if you have a video or pictures you would share from our day together, he is making it razzle dazzle. I don't know if you send it on a DVD or a flash drive or how, but I sure would appreciate any memories you want to share. The comments section has gotten a new face lift and the articles. I have had some great articles written about the trip that you will love reading.

New Picture Book
Oh My Gosh, I just remembered, I finally published a book! It is a picture book that my computer GURU, Ro Scalzo created on her Mac. There are captions so I did get to write some words. I made the book for placing in the vacation rental houses that my friend Shannon of: Walk About Retreatshas. Now folks are wanting them as keepsakes after the trips. It was another charter client; Rob Smith who gave me the use of his pictures after the day I taught his 4 year old grandson how to snorkel. Wow, Rob is a fantastic photographer. It was one of those "glass days" where the same cloud hung in the same perfect sky all day in the same place. You remember a day like that; I do hope, come on back and let's do it again.

IMP II Gets a New Bonnet
As far as the boat is concerned, she got a new bonnet. The IMP ll now has two new Bimini Tops with a connector so she is completely sun and rain proof once again. I was up close and personal with the mangroves one to many times, she was looking as Raggety as Raggety the Dolphin. I am still walking my talk with a quiet, completely combusting Yamaha 200HP 4 stroke engine. The new cushions have been ordered and she will be wearing her new dress soon.

Family Update
My husband Art and I took off to play in the snow at Wolf Run Ski Resort above Asheville N C in mid January. It was in the low 40's in the keys and we figured if you have to be cold you might as well play in the snow......these crazies went tubing down the runs with 5 year olds teaching us how to pop a wheelie on a tube. We now have even greater empathy for all of you that live and have to work in snow; our hats are off to you all. We drove up there and now are the proud owners of snow chains and can even put them on! There is a great B &B in Mars Hill NC just below Wolf Run The Inn at Mars Hill. You must enjoy huge amounts of good food and great hospitality if you go there. Back to Key West and warmth...been there ....done that, it was a hoot though.

I did go to Antigua Guatemala in September, no charters because of BP but that was not why I went. I somehow manifested a hole in my macula in my left eye!!! Not good to run the shallow water at high speeds and not have perfect vision. The estimate for what I needed done was $35,000.00 and BP had just taken my profession away. I paid $5000.00 for a now perfect macula plus a cataract lens and stayed there for 22 days to boot.

You must check out my friend from here in Key West, Lori Shea. She created Guatemala Medical Travel a medical tourism business all by herself after sailing there 5 years ago. She has qualified over 30 physicians in all aspects of medicine. I mean a thorough investigation and now she is getting them to do a certification as well. She is a deeply caring person and has found dedicated English speaking physicians that are excellent and care about their patients in an extraordinary way; I was astounded by the care.

I hope you will recommend good stuff to me too, this is a two way street.

Reef Relief
After going out to pasture, so to speak, when I became President "Emeritus" of Reef Relief, I am now an active board member again. I never quit actively teaching, as you yourself know, I just didn't have to go to the meetings any more. Our two directors retired, making it necessary that the people that cared the most about the clean water for healthy coral, step forward. My foremost passion and ultimate desire, which is my mission and life's work is 'for the sea to be healthy', so I stepped back into active duty.

We have kept Reef Relief alive through the major efforts of our new director, Millard McCleary and a revitalized board. Our programs are still going strong in the school system for our 4th graders as well as other grades. Our Coral Camp had a blow out summer attendance and we went longer than ever before. If you are here any week in the summer and want to give your children a really fabulous premium experience, check out our website www.reefrelief.org.

Most important of all is our need for more members. I hope you will consider joining, re-joining, donating, help out any way you can....become an e-activist for instance.

We had major clean ups all around the keys in anticipation of the oil arriving and the trash becoming toxic waste. Reef Relief was out in the field with major volunteer back up to be pro- active.

We are continuing toward a constitutional ban on oil drilling off our coast.
Also a National Ocean Policy is under way and we are a part of developing it. We are continuing to grow partnerships with local governments, regional and national agencies, as well as other community groups to achieve our goal of 365 clean water days in the Keys. This would be through storm water runoff and expanding advanced waste water treatment and sponsoring marine debris removal events.

This is new: my boat or any other that wants to join for the Data Project will be able to soon. We, Reef Relief, are part of the Fl Keys Environmental Coalition at the local College.  Now folks will be able to go out in their boat and take a test kit to do base line date collection and make a difference for our future. I feel much empowered by this opportunity to create good science for the future decisions to be based on. It was not there for the media so the public thought we were getting the oil in the keys erroneously. We never have had anything negative effect us here other than the Media.
